The world of martial arts is vast to say the very least. This is wonderful since so many different people prefer different takes on self defense. If you are in the market for a good martial art, then you may want to investigate a variety of Chinese, American, Korean, Brazilian and Japanese martial arts. This way you'll be able to get a better grasp on what each culture and each style offers. It's important to keep in mind that some martial arts are hard and some styles are soft. Whether you knew it or not, each style has something to offer.

When it comes to Japanese martial arts, some styles that are quite popular in this day and age are shotokan karate, Judo, ju jitsu, goju karate and aikido. It's crucial to realize that just because these are all Japanese martial arts, doesn't mean they're all the same. In reality, they're all different and address different aspects of fighting and self defense. Shotokan karate for example is a hard style that puts a great focus on punching, kicking, blocking and striking. This is called a hard style because it's more external than internal. Karate generally calls for more brute force and less of a focus on internal power. Then there is aikido! This Japanese martial arts styles is a soft art. Its focus is on the redirection of energy. Therefore when someone attacks, you simply redirect their energy and use it against them. Contrary to some beliefs, there is no striking, kicking or punching in aikido. Nevertheless aikido is an effective martial art that's well respected in different cultures.

Judo is a Japanese martial art that's been around for many years. Mainly this style incorporates the redirection of force through flipping and take downs. While it doesn't utilize a lot of kicking techniques, it is effective in it's own respect. Begin your martial arts search online. The Internet is a great place to start searching for martial arts, whether Japanese, Chinese, American or Korean. Not only can you learn all about the various Japanese martial arts, but you can even seek out great schools and academies in your neck of the woods. The key to learning and effectively using a martial art from any culture is all in pinpointing a great teacher. The martial arts instructor you have will make a tremendous difference in what you learn and how you approach the art itself.
