Can pregnant women take botox? This is a question which is very difficult to answer either way. Let us consider in detail all the points involved in botox and pregnancy.
What does the law say, regarding botox and pregnancy?
Well, botox is classified by FDA of USA as category C medicine. The U S Food and Drug Administration use a system of classification of medicines. They determine the possible risk to the fetus when certain medicines are taken by the expectant mother during the pregnancy. The medicines put in category C are NOT studied on humans. However during animal studies of these category C medicines it is found there is harm to animal fetus. If some medicines are not studied in any pregnant woman or animal, then also that medicine is automatically given category C rating.
When botox was given to pregnant mice and rats, two types of defects were found in animal fetus. Some were found under weight. In some delayed bone development was seen. In case of pregnant rabbits miscarriages and birth defects were reported. However for some reasons rabbits seem to be extra sensitive to botox
One interesting observation is that if pregnant women take botulinium toxin type A accidentally, then this toxin never crosses the placenta and never reaches the baby. When food poisoning takes place accidentally, pregnant women are exposed to this toxin.
Botox is used for cosmetic and medicinal purposes and is deemed safe for use.
There are no studies available to say anything decisively about botox and pregnancy. The manufacturers tell not to take botox in pregnancy. It is not known whether this toxin can be passed from mother through her milk to the baby. However for safety, nursing mothers are told not take botox.
The mothers are advised by doctors NOT to take botox during pregnancy for cosmetic reasons. If botox injection was taken before conception or in very early time in first trimester, then possibility of any side effect is practically zero. However doctors advice not to take any more botox injections.
If botox is taken for medical reasons, then discontinuation of botox will become a complex issue. The mother will have to weigh two different sides. First is any health problem that she may have to face due to discontinuation of botox as medicine for health purposes. Second is a possible problem for baby and for safe delivery to her, due to consumption of botox toxin.
In pregnancy the face retains more water and facial lines become less visible. This means there is no need to take botox for cosmetic purposes as nature is doing that work for you. If the pregnant woman is migraine sufferer then she will find that natural supplements like feverfew work better during pregnancy for them.
It is advisable to tell your doctor before taking any botox treatment, whether you are pregnant or whether you are planning to get pregnant in near future. He can advise you best regarding botox and pregnancy.
