HDMI Is Short For High Definition

Are you wondering what HDMI is? HDMI is short for High Definition Multimedia Interface. It is in fact the very first and the only uncompressed, industry supported totally digital audio-video interface. High Definition Multimedia Interface or HDMI has markedly simplified the process of cabling by transferring absolutely crystal clear totally digital audio-video signals through just one cable. This has ensured that the viewers and listeners get the best quality experience from their home theatre.

HDMI cables work as a medium of signal transmission between the receiver (like a dish-antenna) and the player (like you television). HDMI cables can also be used in case of a set-top box, DVD player, an audio-video screen/monitor, audio/video receiver etc.

HDMI cables support enhanced, standard or HD video in addition to multi channel audio (digital) on just one cable. It supports all the currently present compressed formats like DTS or Digital Dolby. It also supports 192-KHz, 8 channel uncompressed digital formats. It relays all of the ATSC High Definition TV (HDTV)standards.

The latest version of HDMI is HDMI v1.3. It has some significant advantages and still has left room for future upgradation. HDMI V1.3 has new supports which create an absolutely loss-free digital format like DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby True HD. In spite of such advancements, there is still enough bandwidth left to include any changes or upgrades made in the future.

HDMI is better than the conventional technology because it has been accepted as the official standard interface for digital data transmission for the High Definition and the consumer electronics goods market. Statistics claim that more than 200 million HDMI enabled and compatible devices will be there in the markets this year and the number will increase to 1 billion by the end of 2010. There are more than 70o0 registered companies which have started using HDMI commercially.

HDMI is medium which enable the data (audio- video) transfer between consumer electronics stuff and the computers. You can use the HDMI cables to watch movies from your Laptop or Personal Computer on your TV. All this was not possible earlier because only HDMI has the capability to transfer Multi channel formats and high definition media content from a computer to a TV.

HDMI has truly revolutionized the way we listen to music and watch television. And the best part is that is constantly improving and HDMI researchers are constantly striving to deliver a higher quality of audio-video transfer. HDMI v1.3 is just a baby step and it has revolutionized the whole industry. Let’s see what a V2.0 would do.
