What Are HDMI Cables?

By: Dale Viviano

HDMI or High Definition Multimedia Interface has truly changed our living rooms by enhancing the sound and video quality on our home theater systems. HDMI cables transfer high quality audio and video signals over a single cable which reduces the transmission losses and increases the quality of data transferred. The difference between the quality of image or audio transferred over HDMI cables is not so much noticeable at lower resolution levels but as the resolution levels increase, the difference between the quality of image transferred becomes easily noticeable. HDMI cables can reduce the disturbance and distortion considerably.

HDMI cables offer various advantages as against the conventional component cables.

1. As mentioned above HDMI cables offer a much better viewing and listening experience by eliminating the ghosting and softness effects found in the conventional component cables.

2. HDMI cables offer ease of use because it reduces the complexity to a great extent. HDMI cables significantly reduce the cost involved too along with the complexity because all in all only a single cable is involved. It combines multi channel audio and video into a single cable. All these features greatly reduce the complexity and cost involved in the upgradation of systems at a later date.

3. HDMI cables enable a dual way communication between the sources of video (like a cd/dvd player) and the Digital Television or screen. This helps in easily setting up features like auto configuration and one-touch play. By making use of HDMI cables Devices deliver the best format automatically on the display unit that it is connected with. Thus, one does not need to keep on adjusting forever to get that best picture on the TV screen.

4. Devices using HDMI can support HDCP (High Definition Copy Protocol or High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection). High Definition Copy Protocol or HDCP using devices ensure that they have reception rights to the most premium quality High Definition content today and at any later date in the future. Blu-ray and HD DVD technologies have delayed the introduction of another feature called content protection flag or more commonly, image constraint token with today’s HD or High Definition movies to aid in reducing the potentially serious issues related with transition. But with everything in place, this feature is expected to activated anytime soon in the future. This means that in future illegal signal interception will become virtually impossible as HD movies will not be visible at High Definition resolutions over analog interfaces and other such unprotected interfaces.
