The history of Java is not that rich compared to any programming languages of the DOS-based environments. Java technology had evolved during the recent years where the computer industry already has a reputation of its own even without the presence of Java programming technology despite the fact that Java had been one of the useful object-oriented programming languages of all time.
The history of Java began in year 1991 when Sun Microsystems had come to develop Java as a general purpose object oriented programming language. Previously, Java was used mainly for the purpose of Internet programming as it incorporate with the concepts of the object-oriented programming as well as its platform is independent. From this programming, Java is being run on Java Virtual Machine or the JVM, which serves as the "interpreter" of the Java technology.
In the year 1990, with the guidance of James Gosling, Sun Microsystems came to a decision of building software for the purpose of consumer electronic devices such as VCRs and televisions. James Gosling is the once who conceptualize the Java programming language. After the hard work of the guidance of Gosling, a new programming language was developed in the name of "Oak" as it derived from the concepts of C and C++. The "Oak" was released in 1991. Apparently in the year 1993, Sun Microsystems and James Gosling had developed a programming language based from the Oak language. They called this program as "web applet" that can be executed in all computer types connected to the Internet. The web applet will transform the text-based Internet to the graphical-based Internet. In the year 1994, there was a newly found language that they had developed into the first browser. This was named as the "hot java". This program of "hot java" has the capability of running the applet programs. It was in the year 1995, when the actual name of Oak was renamed into Java because Sun Microsystems believe that it should have registered product name that will easily be remembered by people. Because of the rename, many other companies have easily recognized Java.
Java had become popular due to the unique technology designs that are based from the three key elements. These elements include the rich set of significant object classes, powerful programming language constructs and the usage of applets. In writing codes for Java program, you need to have an editor, a Java Runtime Environment and a Java Compiler. These are the essential requirements in writing a Java program.
