International Practical Shooting Confederation Is Popular

By: Nicky Patterson

The International Practical Shooting Confederation, or IPSC, was started to promote the act of practical shooting. There was a strong need for the rules and regulations of practical shooting to be finalized. Under this Confederation, firearms are maintained and given access to those with positive motivations. Those who wish to be a part of the Confederation are not judged in regards to their occupation. The IPSC is a non-political organization that does not discriminate against race, religion, or occupation.

While sponsored by the Confederation, all equipment and firearms must be up to code. During competitions, the targets have to be of normal size and there cannot be any modification conducted on firearms during the competition. The shooting courses are also required to be general in skill. There cannot be any advanced courses, unless it is stated to the marksman. During a competition, a course can be repeated but not repetitively. With any practical shooting competition, it is free-style. Therefore, if a problem presents itself, the participant is allowed to solve the problem in any manner he or she sees fit.

Marksmen who wish to join the Confederation are not allowed to acquire an individual membership. Individual Federations are able to join. The Federation that is applying must be within the region that the IPSC sponsors. However, the members of the Executive Council are able to be individual members of IPSC. The Executive Council is made up of the President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. The President is elected on a two year term. If the President is unable to fulfill his or duties, then they can pass down the title to another member of the Council.

In order to join the IPSC, those wishing to join are required to submit an application to the Executive Council. If their application is accepted, a membership fee will be billed. When reviewing the application, the Executive Council is required to make sure that the applicant will be able to be responsible for their membership. The Council must also verify that the person acting for the Federation is a representative from the organization. The applying Federation must also promise to respect the rules that are enforced within the IPSC and continue to follow the rules during any championship. If the Executive Council denies the Federation membership entrance, the application still has to be rejected by other members of the IPSC at the next meeting.
