Java Handsets Can Aid Anyone

By: Jessie Geralds

The platform of Java handsets is very dominant nowadays. This is because many of the current mobile wireless brands support wireless Java. Because of this, large shipments of Java handsets both regional and global are now in process.

The Java handsets had been considered the most dominant terminal platform in the wireless sector and this had been determined by the Zelos Group. There had been 450 million Java handsets that had been sold in 2007 as support for the technology. This amount corresponds to the 74% of the wireless mobiles that had been shipped of same year. The potential of Java handsets in the market is increasing as the years passed by due to its functions to serve platforms for any downloadable games and contents. Because of these, developers and programmers had been piqued on the interests of creating services and contents based on the Java 2 Micro Edition or the J2ME that are carried by Asia and United States. The interests of the carriers and the OEM had been very evident as well in Europe where there are various mobile brand carriers of provisioning services.

With the boosted technology of Java handsets, the OEMs and the mobile brand carriers are now drawn to Java that they considered as open platform to guard against any lock-ins. However, the openness of the platform of Java through Java handsets may have some downsides mostly for developers, the game developers in particular. This is because the developers are forced in optimizing their applications for individual Java handset OEM as well as the mobile brand carrier implementations of the Java 2 Micro Edition, which can be substantially different. If these processes will get to standards, the developers will surely have their headaches as well as challenges in supporting the new functionalities.

The Java handsets have already secured its substantial adoption in the wireless technology especially in the markets of Asia and United States. The largest carrier of the Java handsets in Asia is found in Korea, which is the SK Telecom. The SK Telecom had relied its technology from the Sinjisoft that is called the GVM, which is now migrating to support the technology of the Java 2 Micro Edition or the J2ME. Nokia is also a big carrier of the Java handsets and it strategically committed to all the technology releases of Java. Also, big percentage of the Java handsets carried by Nokia will also be supporting the Java 2 Micro Edition. However, a portion of Java handsets carried by Nokia is lowered in the markets of North America because of the introduction of the new designs for Java handsets for the TDMA and CDMA networks. Other big carriers of Java handsets are the Motorola, Samsung, Nextel and Siemens that are also fully committed to the platform and support to Java technology.
