The idea of the motor scooter is very simple. The engine here is hidden under the seat. The motor scooter gives the rider facility of resting his both feet on the platform. In motorbikes the engine is situated in the frame of the body. The early motor scooter was supposed to be small wheels small engine type vehicle. The motor scooter having engine capacity less than 50 cc is generally called as the moped. The engines in the capacity of 50 to 250 cc can be mostly of the single stroke variety. If 400 to 600 cc motor is used in the motor scooter then the engine will be of twin cylinder type. Initially the engine used to be air cooled two stroke type one. Now some motor scooters can be of water cooled type.
The fact is that the motor scooter market is customer driven like any other industry. Initially the motor scooter was recognized by the small 8 to 10 inches diameter wheels. As the consumer tests changed, the size of the motor scooter also changed. Now maxi wheel motor scooter is available. Similarly you can have big wheel motor scooter also. The size of the vehicle no more differentiates the motor scooter.
The same phenomenon is observed in case of engine capacity. Initially the small capacity engine was the differentiating factor in the motor scooter. That reality is over now. Now four stroke engines are also there in the motor scooter. Same thing applies to all other features. Only the basic form of the body has remained similar.
You can still have foot rest and body shield. Of course a lot of modern technology is now introduced every where. Now high quality plastic will be used in the body building to reduce the weight and giving better scooter mileage
The first two wheeler with the step through feature was built in around 1900. Those early attempts to manufacturing of the motor scooter failed because of two major factors. The first factor was the technical problems. Those scooters had lot of clumsy technology. As they were not user friendly, there failure was assured. The cost was also on pretty higher side. The first usable, rugged motor scooters were manufactured for the military purpose in the Second World War. The American army used the light compact motor scooter in war times and afterwards.
The automatic clutch feature became popular immediately. The ease of operating of this motor scooter made it popular both with men and women. The step through design was accepted by all the population easily. The same design in some form is used even today after nearly hundred years.
