By: Quinn Redmond

There are many things that people do not know about obituaries like the obituary genealogy for example. Indeed, many people have neglected the importance and the traditions of obituaries and for this reason we may consider that the genealogy of these funeral compositions has also become much neglected as a study field.

If we take the course of history that created the obituaries that people use today we will firstly notice the apparition of this traditions as early as 1890s, as the first newspapers appeared with special rubrics for these purposes. People found themselves in the need of mourning the beloved ones that died by using the publications available for this reason.

That is why we may consider the choice of people who responded to this initiative of newspaper editors very fast and with a great recognition to the opportunity that was given to them. Since that time on, people kept on composing texts for obituaries and started creating more and more variants for this tradition to be used.

So we can notice the great variety of styles and manners in which people create obituaries today by using their own personal implication to express the feelings that they have caused by the death of a person. Obituaries are mainly used to express grief and sorrow.

We may consider that this is the basic role of these compositions. This opportunity of letting everyone know about your feelings of regret towards the death of a person has become very commonly used, as people have used the services of these rubrics more and more often since the time of their apparition. Individual obituaries are also a means by which other people than the family or friends of the dead person can express their regrets and condolences for the sorrowful event of a certain person they knew and appreciated.

The discussion about independent obituaries can go on and on, as there are many elements and details to be taken into consideration about these specific compositions. Independent obituaries have various forms and contents and for this reason we may consider that most of them were created in function of the personal feelings of the person or group that composed them in the first place. The regret is always expressed, as well as the condolences of the ones who publish them in newspapers. Hence we may consider that they are little pieces of writing expressing regrets and sorrow most of the times.
