Old Obituraries Are Interesting

By: Rae Goodman

Have you ever thought about the old obituaries from the previous centuries? Have these been recorded or not especially those of the notable people during that time? During the eras of 1800s and 1900s, plenty of people have died because of serious conditions or diseases that are just not familiar to us up to this time. Of course there are other causes other than diseases such as farm, auto and train accidents, occasional murders and war deaths. However, diseases are the highest in quantity based on some historical records.

The ancient or old obituaries from the previous centuries are recorded in most newspaper archives in the United States. These obituaries are very detailed and even comes in customized styles. Most of the old obituaries were recorded after the end of the Civil War. Because of these, the old obituaries that are recorded are just simple. If the person is not a prominent member of the community, the obituary is rather short regardless on what are the historical contributions and attributes of the person are.

Old obituaries do not only reveal the date on when the person died but also reveal how that person died or where he or she died from. Other information includes the names of their spouses as well as relatives, the place and date they were born, the place where they are buried and many more. In some old obituaries there are some information that are terribly informative and even contain biographical information about the person’s wealth. Old obituaries can also be a very useful source of information for a woman’s maiden name. The period that follows after the Civil War had made many changes especially that there had been large migrations of several families and groups of people to other places such as the West. Because of this, it had been very difficult to trace on where exactly the people ended up during the period. Especially on the references of their birth and location. With this, recording of the old obituaries had been very tedious as finding references about the death of a person is difficult. In the recent days, many websites are attempting to produce large databases of old obituaries encompassing the hopes of other people who have lost their family and relatives. In this way, they can also get connected to their families in easier way. One sample of this is that finding the death records of a particular man and woman of different places knowing in the end that they are married couple based on the facts gathered from the old obituaries.
