Practical Long Range Rifle Shooting Is Possilble

By: Casey Howard

Practical long range rifle shooting is the act of aiming for distant targets using the rifle, ammunition, and the shooter’s ability to hit the target under a short time limit. The targets used for long range rifle shooting vary depending on the competition or preference of the shooter. In certain circumstances, the shooter may be acquired with an unknown target that is placed far into the distance. There are also moving targets, or the shooter having a spotter that communicates with them about the target placement. During competitions, there might be a combination of all three targets that the shooter has to hit under a short time frame. They include the types of circumstances that the shooter would come into contact with during a sniper or field rifle match.

The most popular rifle used in long range shooting is a "bolt action" rifle. However, an "auto-loader" helps the shooter have accuracy. The term "zeroing" is used often in long range rifle shooting, meaning the point of impact that is set at a particular distance. The distance is known as the "primary zero". This is where the bullet will hit where the "cross- hairs" are placed. Finding a large open land can be difficult for long range shooters to find. Registered shooting ranges are usually the only place where a shooter can practice long range at 200 yards or more. When using a registered range, the shooter typically has to be limited to a bench area. This gives the shooter only one shooting position. Larger shooting ranges that sponsor national matches will allow you to have more shooting positions and farther distances. You may also be able to find National forest lands that are legalized for long range rifle shooting. Many of them do limit you to particular rules, and you may also be required to clean up your area after you are done.

When you embark on a long range rifle trip, make sure that you have the following packed:

* A rifle that reaches at least 100 yards.

* Long range ammunition

* An information card that you can write down you statistics and any environment details

* Range finder(particularly one of laser)

* Protection for your ears and eyes

Make sure that you pack light, because you may have to hike to several shooting positions. Also, mark your route through the woods so that you will be able to make it back out. It is best to travel with another shooter if you are practicing in the woods. If you are not able to bring a buddy, make sure that someone knows your estimated location. Many wooded areas do not have a strong signal for cell phones, therefore you will not be able to contact anyone. You will also have to inform the forest ranger of your activity so that they will know there is a shooter practicing in the area. They can also keep a watch for you if a mishap were to occur.
