Do You Have A Scooter?

By: Sam Dillon

We all know that scooter is a two wheeler vehicle. The motorbike is also a two wheeler. What makes the scooter the scooter and a motorbike, the motorbike? One obvious design difference is the size of the wheels. While the motorbike will have big wheels, the scooter will always have the smaller wheels.

The engine size is always small in scooter as compared to motorbikes. In modern days one can find higher capacity engine scooters. But traditionally the small size and the low costs were most important features of the scooter. The basic characteristic of the scooter was small wheels, small engines and low price as compared to motorbikes

.

The most obvious part in the design is the way the engine is mounted in the vehicle. In motorbikes, you will find the engine in between the frame. This in turn means that the engine can be visually seen and that the driver has to put his legs along the two sides of the motorbike.

In case of the scooter the engine is totally hidden. And hence it is not seen visually. The engine is not situated in the middle part of the frame. Thus there is space to put both feet together on the front side. Similarly in the front there will be panels. The engine will be at the rear end. There will be some storage space below the seat of the driver. The design can be called as step through design,

The floor boards are present in the scooter. Generally in modern times the scooter has automatic transmission.

The word scooter is not defined in the law. The scooter itself has evolved a lot.

It was previously associated with the small engine power. Now that may not be the case anymore. Previously engines from 50 to 100 cc were used in the scooter. Now you can find scooter with engine capacity of more than 700cc. So the idea of small engine may not hold true today. Similarly some scooter model may have totally three wheels. The previously known front wheel is replaced by the pair of the front wheel in this type of the scooter. It is clear that law can not define scooter in its strict legal terminology. The transportation department of USA defines scooter as the vehicle having a platform for operator’s feet

There are always two important parts of any vehicle. The first is engine and the other is transmission system that transmits the power of the engine to the rear wheel. In the case of the scooter both the engine and this transmission system is situated under the seat.

The scooter manufacturing started after the Second World War. The Italian model of the scooter called as Vespa was standard for nearly 35 years. There after different modifications started taking place. Modern scooter caters to all types of tastes. You can get scooter from low price to high price range. The types of transmission technologies used can also differ greatly in the modern scooter.
