Shooting Clothing Is Necessary

By: Rory Francis

Shooting activities is certainly not thought of as a place for high fashion. However, there are pieces of shooting clothing that should be an essential part of the wardrobe. The key is to dress for comfort and safety. This will cut down on the possibilities for injury or other problems that may be caused by the elements of a shooting environment.

The first place to start when selecting shooting clothing is what environment the shooting will take place in. Begin with pairing shoe selection to the terrain that will be covered. Boots are ideal footwear for virtually any area. Go one step further and add water proof protection to the boots. This will help keep feet and ankles dry in the event a small body of water must be crossed during the shooting adventure. Army boots or hiking boots are definitely recommended over tennis shoes.

Weather is another deciding factor when selecting shooting clothing. On a warm weather day, be quick to select a short sleeve shirt. There is still the need to protect bare arms from brush, tree branches or other pieces of nature that could easily tear or scratch skin. When electing to dress in camouflage, match the pattern to the shooting environment. Legs can be covered with protective leg garments or simply with a pair of jeans or other long pants.

An invaluable piece of shooting clothing is guards. These protect a shooter from possible rebound damage when shooting. Guards can be worn by themselves or built into normal shooting upper body clothing. It is also advisable to purchase a set of shin guards and knee pads for protection in areas of brush and woods.

In terms of safety, shooting clothing ensembles should definitely include eyewear and hearing protection. Safety goggles function as viable eyewear protection for shooters who wear contacts or do not need other corrective lens options. An eye doctor can assist shooters who wear glasses with adequate eyewear protection.

Another good safety shooting clothing option is a bright colored hat or vest. This will help members of a shooting party identify one another. It will also let other shooters know where you are so that they do not accidentally shoot in your direction.

Shooting clothing gear can be purchased at a variety of locations. Sporting goods stores such as Bass Pro Shop and Cabela’s are a good starting point. These locations carry large amounts of hunting supplies, clothing and other equipment. Local shooting clubs can also point a shooter in the right direction for finding shooting clothing. This is also a good resource for what type of shooting clothing works best for a given area.
