A shooting competition is commonly referred to as Bullseye. The competition requires shooters to fire handguns at stationary targets within a specific time period. Many firearm organizations maintain rules and regulations to govern any shooting competition that takes place.
The shooting competition allows shooters to utilize one of three pistols. These can be a .22 caliber rim fire hand gun, .32caliber or larger center fire hand gun or a .45 ACP pistol. In addition, one semi-automatic pistol or double action revolver is allowed for the rapid fire stage of the shooting competition. The revolver must be able to hold a minimum of 5 rounds of ammunition to be used in the competition.
Some shooters elect to use a shooting box to organize all the equipment required to participate in the event. Sight equipment may also be used to help in the competition if the shooter desires.
In terms of handguns for the shooting competition, rim fire pistols are the ideal firearm of choice for many shooters. These pistols provide tremendous accuracy when hitting targets. Many are able to achieve perfect scores or come close to doing so. Great examples of rim fire pistols to use are the Smith & Wesson 41 and the Hammerli 208.
Another option for hand gun selection is a center fire pistol. This type of fire arm is generally used for defensive shooting. The accuracy is not quite as pinpointed as that of a rim fire pistol. This is typically the choice of experience shooting competition participants.
A firearm will only be effective in a shooting competition if the shooter is able to maintain a controlled grip on the hand gun. For this reason, many shooters use a variety of anatomical grips that are detailed to fit an individual shooter’s hand. The grips provide a thumb rest for better recoil control and an isolation of the trigger finger from the remaining fingers holding the hand gun. At the bottom of each hand grip is an adjustable strap for further control.
A shooting competition consists of three rounds of fire. The first is a slow fire round in which shooters must fire ten rounds of ammunition within a ten minute time period. Next is the timed fire round where shooters complete two sets of five-round ammunition shots in a short twenty second time period. The final round is a rapid fire round where another two sets of five-round ammunition are fired in a ten second time frame. All of the shooting is completed in a one-handed grip from a standing position.
Shooting competitions are held throughout the year at various gun clubs and related organizations around the country.
