Shooting Supplies Are Much Needed

By: Jamie Preston

Engaging in shooting activities requires more than just a firearm and a target to shoot at. There are three elements of ammunition, hearing and eye protection that work together with the firearm to ensure safety and precision when participating in shooting actions inside and outside of a gun club or shooting range.

By far the most essential piece of shooting supplies is the firearm. This is a device that fires single or multiple shots depending on the type of firearm utilized. A firearm can be used as a weapon against another individual or as a method of self protection as is the case with home security. Various types of firearms include a shot gun, pistol, riffle, automatic, semi-automatic and hand gun.

Firing of the ammunition occurs by a process referred to as rapid burning. To achieve this, a smokeless powder or other propellant is used inside the firearm barrel. Modern firearms maintain riffled barrels that help with the stability and accuracy of shooting.

The next essential shooting supplies component is ammunition. Every firearm shoots off something called a round. Small caliber firearms fire single units of ammunition in the form of cartridges or bullets. The term Small Arms Ammunition is used to refer to the cartridges fired from hand guns, machine guns and rifles. Large caliber firearms fire multiple units of ammunition in the form of shells. This is commonly used in artillery practice.

When numerous units of ammunition are fired in a single setting, this is referred to as a shot. Hand guns are designed specifically for this type of shooting. A member of the hand gun family ideally suited for this is a shot gun. In the event a shot is fired and nothing happens, a dud event has occurred. Duds are ammunition pieces that failed to fire as intended. This results in what is called a misfire.

One of the fundamental elements to shooting supplies is hearing protection. This takes the form of something similar to radio headphones. The technology involved takes the unsafe sound of a discharging firearm and reduces the sound to a safer level. Many shooters prefer this type of hearing protection as it allows them to maintain sound contact with other shooters and gun range activities.

Another safety feature to shooting supplies is eye protection. Shooting action occurs in close ranges to the human eye area. Firearms maintain recoil functions when the trigger is pulled. Eye protection prevents any shrapnel or loose ammunition object from propelling backwards and hitting the shooter’s eye area. In addition to this, outside elements such as wind, rain and other weather factors are all various reasons shooters should always wear eye protection.
