Film Review- The Family Stone

By: Jason Penkacik

Diane Keaton, Craig T. Nelson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Luke Wilson, Claire Danes, Rachel McAdams star in the family comedy/drama for the Christmas season "The Family Stone".

In the movie Sarah Jessica Parker stars as Meredith an uptight executive who is dating Everett and Everett is taking Sarah home to meet the family for Christmas.

Things don't go well for the family meeting Meredith because of an encounter that Everett's sister had with her earlier on. They treat her so bad that she calls her sister and decide to spend Christmas together with the family. Meredith clearly needs the support.

The story while funny and believable has a lot of holes. The movie definitely leaves something to be desired. I went to the movies looking to laugh but insead found myself sitting and thinking instead. While there are some funny moments like when Meredith spills the egg mixture on herself and when Meredith is drunk, the story just doesn't hold up for me.

Luke Wilson which you can tell from the trailer does fall for Meredith and Everett goes for Meredith's sister Julie played by Claire Danes. While that is believable the fact that Everett only spent 1 hour with Julie before deciding that she is the girl for him is just not believable. There also weird moments inserted to the movie that just don't really fit.

The movie while funny and entertaining just really isn't a must see for me. The script is your typical happy family Christmas script but with things left out. Mom is dying of cancer but the kids don't get told only a few do the others don't ever seem to find out. Diane Keaton does a great job of playing the mom who no one is good enough for her son. It's a bit over the top in my opinion.

If you are looking for a holiday movie: go see Fun with Dick and Jane, The Chronicles of Narnia, or Walk the Line.

Skip this film til it comes on DVD.
