Choosing Your Formal Dress

By: Amy Chou

Have you been invited to a ball, semiformal, or special occasion? Among the thoughts going through your mind is probably the question of what to wear.

You should consider several factors in choosing your dress. If you are accompanied by a date, is he wearing a tuxedo or suit? What dress style is appropriate for the occasion? The more formal the occasion, the more formal your dress should be. How will the dress look on you for your body type?

The cocktail dress has a knee-length skirt and may have full sleeves or no sleeves. The cocktail dress is perfect for the evening party or semiformal, where your date will wear a necktie.

If you are going to a ball or formal occasion, you should consider an A-line dress, a strapless gown, or a halter dress.

The A-line dress has a full-length skirt with a very wide bottom. This classic style is worn for formal occasions such as proms and balls, where your date will wear a tuxedo. If you are pear-shaped, this style will be particularly flattering on you as it minimizes your hips and thighs, while accentuating your upper body.

The strapless gown, sometimes known as the tube dress, flatters women with hourglass figures and nice shoulders.

The halter dress has a full-length skirt and is held by straps around the neck and across the back. This style flatters the arms and back, which are exposed.

Spend some time choosing your dress to make yourself look beautiful and have a great time at your formal.
