Cope When Your Depression Medication Isn't Working

By: Justin Meyer

Sometimes, when taking medication for depression, they won’t work so well. There are things that you can do when this situation arises. The first is to start treating your depression like it was all situational. By doing that, you will be able to try and control your symptoms when your medicine is less effective. If you start following practices so you can treat the depression holistically, then you will get into a pattern that will also be beneficial when you are trying to manage your symptoms without any problems.

The second thing to do is start to document (either on paper or in your mind) the problems that are arising. Bring them up to your therapist, and if the problem persists for longer than a week or so, you should contact your psychiatrist to discuss the situation. That is one of the most important things that you can do. Discussing any changes in the results of your medication is one of the most important things that you can do. If there are problems, they could be caused by the medication itself. Looking into the medications that you are taking and examining the side effects is important. Know if mood swings or nervousness are side effects of your drugs. If they are, and that is what is happening, then you need to find out if you can be prescribed other drugs. Sometimes, all that is needed is to change your medication around. Other times, the psychiatrist might have some other ideas and it might work to try changing the amounts of medicine that you are taking.
