An Introduction To Radio Advertising

By: Rae Goodman

You may not listen to the radio anymore, and that might lead you to believe that radio advertising is pretty much dead. Though there are some that switch to satellite radio so they can get shows they want and avoid the advertising, there are still plenty who like to listen to the radio in their cars when traveling, and they want to keep the local flavor that comes with disc jockeys. Radio is a good way to stay informed, and even if listener numbers are going down, this is still a viable advertising venue for most.

There are times when you should not bother with radio advertising, but there are more times when you should think about it first. When you have a special event, no matter what you sell or do, the radio is one of the best ways to get the word out there. Sales come to mind, along with open houses and expansions. These are things people may not hear about otherwise, and it can mean bigger numbers hear about and come to your events. This works well for both for profit and non profit organizations and businesses.

There are some things that should always rely on radio advertising. If you have a stereo store, what better way to reach those who might be most interested in hearing about what you have to offer? Car advertisements and those for tires and repairs also do well on the radio, because most listen while driving. The times when those things are most on the mind of anyone is when they are actually in their car. Radio advertising reaches all the right people at the right times in this case. Restaurants also do well on the radio and can let travelers know where they can find something to eat.

If you aren?t sure that radio advertising will benefit your business, you may want to give it a trail run to see if you get any results. Give it a few months before you decide if it is or is not working for your particular business. The numbers of listeners might be down, but they all still need stuff, and while most will surf through television channels when commercials come on, not as many do when they come on the radio. This is because they are driving, and they may not like any other stations. See if radio advertising won?t work for you. You may be very pleased with the results.
